Texas law keeps death certificates confidential for 25 years from the date of death under Government Code Section 552.115. During that time, only immediate family members can get certified copies. Immediate family is defined as spouse, parent, child, sibling, or grandparent. After 25 years, the record is public and open to anyone. The death index, which includes basic data such as name, death date, and county, is not restricted in the same way for public access.

Fort Bend County death records from before 1976 may be in the Texas Death Certificates collection at Fold3 and in the free collections at FamilySearch Texas. The Ancestry Texas Death Index 1903-2000 also includes Fort Bend County entries. These are useful for genealogical research into Sugar Land families from the early part of the twentieth century through the end of the millennium.

Verification letters from DSHS confirm a death is on file without providing a full certified copy. They include the name, date of death, and county of death. Verification letters are not legal substitutes for certified copies but are less restricted and can be useful for some purposes.
