Hidalgo County Death Records
Hidalgo County is one of the most populous counties in Texas and covers much of the southern Rio Grande Valley. The county clerk has been in existence in Texas since 1836. The Edinburg office is the main location for all county-wide vital records. Land records are available on the county website for searching, viewing, printing, and downloading. The death index is available through the county clerk for records from 1903 forward. Both the county and DSHS draw from the same statewide TxEVER database, so either can issue certified copies of Edinburg and Hidalgo County death records.
Edinburg sits near McAllen, Mission, Pharr, and other Rio Grande Valley cities. For deaths that occurred in those other cities, the Hidalgo County Clerk also handles records for unincorporated areas, while some larger cities in the county maintain their own local vital records offices. Who Can Request Edinburg Death Records
Properly qualified applicants for Edinburg death index records include the registrant (if living), immediate family members by blood, marriage, or adoption, a guardian, a legal agent, or a funeral home representative. The Texas Administrative Code defines immediate family as the registrant's parent or guardian, brother or sister, grandparent, spouse, or adult child. Applicants who do not fall into one of those categories must provide legal documentation showing a direct tangible need for the record. This applies to records from within the past 25 years.
Records older than 25 years are public information under Texas law. No family relationship is required. Verification letters are available for all deaths since 1903 and confirm the name, death date, and county. They are not legal substitutes for certified copies. If a search fails to find the record, a non-refundable search fee applies. Use FamilySearch or Ancestry to verify the record exists before you pay for a certified copy.
Acceptable ID for vital records requests is listed at dshs.texas.gov. One Group A primary document is preferred: Texas driver's license, state ID, U.S. passport, military ID, or license to carry a handgun.
