The Brazos County Clerk accepts in-person requests and may provide same-day service for some records.

If the search finds no record, you still pay the fee. DSHS mailing address is: Texas Vital Statistics, Department of State Health Services, P.O. Box 12040, Austin, TX 78711-2040. Their general information line is (888) 963-7111.

Under Texas Government Code Section 552.115, death records are confidential for 25 years. Certified copies are only available to immediate family members of the deceased during this period. The statute defines immediate family as spouse, parent, child, sibling, and grandparent. Legal guardians and authorized representatives with proper documentation can also request records. Anyone can request a verification letter that shows whether a death is on file without revealing restricted details.

After 25 years, the full death record becomes public. The general death index itself, which lists name, date, county, and certificate number, is not restricted from disclosure as long as it does not reveal adoption or paternity information. This is confirmed under the same statute and Texas Attorney General decisions. The Clayton Library in Houston at Houston Public Library has extensive Texas death index collections available for research.

Online genealogy tools including Ancestry Texas records and FamilySearch cover College Station and Brazos County death index entries from 1903 through 2000. These are free or low-cost resources for historical research.
